HEEL TREAD Golf GTI MK1 Socks

Before the now ubiquitous plaid that VW brought back to the seats of Moderna GTI, there was its lesser-known plaid cousin that "sportivized" the interior of the Mk1 GTI, a car that would forever change the hot hatch industry.

In 1974, some Volkswagen employees began to develop a secret plan to create a sports version of the Golf. Initially dubbed Super Golf, it took a year for them to show superiors their clandestine project. Having finally received the green light, it was immediately accelerated to a world premiere in September 1975 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. Media reaction was excellent and in June 1976 the moderately priced GTI was launched in Germany.

The initial planned print run was 5,000 units. What they didn't foresee is that the combination of cheap, fast, light and practical was something the world had been holding its breath for a long time, one of those "I didn't even know I wanted one until I saw it for the first time"situations. With numerous sporty upgrades, including tartan sports seats and a golf-ball-shaped gearbox handle, the small 182 km/h hatchback blew everyone's expectations and sold almost half a million cars. Not only did it introduce the hot hatch segment to the world, it also created a dynasty that, some 50 years later, remains strong - at least if you exclude a few generations that were what would be called, in golfing parlance, bogeys and duffs.

Decades of technological advances and design evolution mean that almost every part imaginable in a Moderna GTI is substantially different from the Mk1. Except for the checkered fabric of the seats, which remains part of the character of the GTI. Gunhild Liljequist was a porcelain painter who joined the VW design team in 1964. A long-time admirer of the classic tartan patterns of the Scottish clans, she was responsible for many of the sporty details of the interior of the GTI Mk1 and several other VWs in the following decades.

The "Clark Plaid" variant was revived by VW for the Mk5 and has since become one of the fabric options for the most popular GTI seats - and an inspiration for one of the first and most popular Heel Tread models.

Now it's time to stage its lesser-known chess cousin. The black, red and yellow tartan seat cover may not have received much acclaim in recent years, but it was there from the start and created one of our favourite Mk1 GTI interiors.

80% Combed Cotton, 17% Polyamide, 3% Elastane. 
We use seamless knitting to create a sock with no stitches. 

Wash inside out (40ºC/100ºF max). Do not tumble dry, iron, bleach or dry clean.
