At one point, the sequence of events of the 1976 season made it unlikely that either Lauda or Hunt would be crowned champions. James, despite the natural abilities and extreme stunts he performed behind the wheel, was still the underdog in the group. He didn't care about the technical issues or the tests. All he wanted was to drive to the limit any vehicle he was given.
Then came the infamous German Grand Prix, held in the so-called"Green Hell". And hell went to Lauda, as he inexplicably crashed on one of the circuit's easiest corners. Brett Lunger failed to avoid a brutal collision with the Ferrari. Lauda's helmet flew off as the car burst into flames.
In the hospital, he was administered the last rites, showing the severity of his condition. Against all odds, 39 days later, I was behind the wheel of a Ferrari. His strength, courage and willpower became legendary.
However, Hunt scored precious points, meaning the title would be decided in the final race, the Fuji Grand Prix. Under merciless weather conditions, both drivers feared another tragedy, but only the McLaren man had something to prove. So while Lauda entered the pit lane after one lap, deciding it was too risky to race, Hunt continued to press under treacherous conditions to achieve the points needed for his only title.
Honoring Niki or James is about celebrating friendship, true sportsmanship and courage, and now you can do it comfortably.
