From the first hours of the invasion of Ukraine, as Russian aircraft roared through the skies over Kiev and missiles burned on the horizon, rumors began to circulate on the internet about a hero of the Ukrainian resistance. As is common in rumors, soon the exploits of a mysterious fighter pilot spread like wildfire around the world. This specter appeared out of nowhere, destroying its enemies and disappearing into thin air. Flying a Ukrainian MiG-29, he was credited with shooting down at least six Russian fighters in a single day of combat - making him the first European ace since World War II. He is known only as the Kiev Ghost.
Of course, there is little or no evidence for any of these claims. Just a few unreliable tweets that were amplified by the 'algorithm' and a global media eager to share any news that might try to balance the overwhelming tragedy reported by its journalists on the ground. All over the world, powerless and distressed people also wanted to believe in The Legend of a mysterious lone Savior who faces a much more powerful enemy and wins - a real-life David and Goliath.
However, this people's champion symbolizes something very real. The Ukrainian resistance to a barbaric attempt at subjugation and the unwavering defiance in the face of a certain doom. Urban legend or popular war propaganda, in times of dark horror, The Ghost of Kiev is a symbol of hope for a people who desperately need it, a reason to be brave and fight another day. In this sense, The Ghost of Kiev is as real as possible, and its spirit will never be crushed.
We choose to believe - and we know we are not alone.
